Questions for Yourself
How do we actually cook? Daily from-scratch meals, weeknight assembly, weekend projects, takeout with occasional cooking — the honest answer shapes everything from the range choice to the counter space.
Who uses this kitchen? One cook or two, kids doing homework at the island, a tall household or a short one, anyone with mobility needs now or later. Design for the real users.
What drives us crazy today? The specific frustrations — no landing space, the dark corner, the dishwasher that hits the oven — are the design brief. A remodel that does not fix the frustrations is just redecorating.
How long are we staying? Forever-home choices (your dream layout, the materials you love) differ from five-year choices (broad appeal, mainstream finishes). Both are valid; they are just different projects.
What is the real budget? Not the wish number — the number that includes a contingency for surprises. Old kitchens hide things; plan for it and sleep better.
Questions for Your Contractor
What is included, exactly? Get it itemized. "Full remodel" means different things to different bidders.
Who is in my house every day? Meet the project lead. Know the crew.
How do you handle surprises? The answer should involve stopping, showing you, and written approval before proceeding.
What is the schedule, in writing? Phases, milestones, and what happens if something slips.
How do change orders work? Priced how, approved by whom, in writing always.
What does the warranty cover? Workmanship warranty terms, and who to call if something is not right in a year.
Questions for the Design
Where does everything land? Groceries coming in, trash going out, dishes from table to dishwasher — walk the daily paths in the new layout.
Is there enough light? Task, ambient, accent — on the drawing, before the drywall.
Can I see it in my light? Every finish sample, in your kitchen, at different times of day, before you commit.
