The Three Tiers

Cabinets come in three broad tiers, and the differences are about sizes, options, and construction — not just price. Understanding the tiers keeps you from overbuying or underbuying for your kitchen.

Stock: Fast and Fixed

Stock cabinets are pre-built in standard sizes and stocked in warehouses. They are the fastest option — often available in days — and the most affordable. The trade-off is fit: your kitchen gets designed around the available sizes, and gaps get filled with filler strips. Construction is typically particleboard boxes with decent but basic hardware. For a straightforward kitchen with standard dimensions, or a rental property, stock is a sensible choice.

Semi-Custom: The Sweet Spot

Semi-custom cabinets are built to order from a manufacturer's catalog of sizes, finishes, and options. You get far more widths, depths, and heights — including the odd sizes older Bowie kitchens demand — plus real finish choices, plywood box upgrades, soft-close hardware standard, and storage options like pull-outs and drawer dividers. Lead time is weeks, not days, because they are built for you. This is where most of our clients land: the fit and quality step up enormously over stock without the custom price.

Custom: Built for the Room

Custom cabinets are built by a cabinetmaker to your exact specifications — any size, any wood, any finish, any interior fitting. They are the answer for unusual spaces, period-perfect historic kitchens, or homeowners who want exactly what they envision down to the sixteenth of an inch. The trade-offs are lead time (often the longest) and cost. For most kitchens, semi-custom gets 95 percent of the way there; custom is for the last 5 percent that matters to you.

What Matters More Than the Tier

Two things matter more than which tier you buy: the box construction (plywood outlasts particleboard in a kitchen's humidity and occasional leaks) and the installation (level, plumb, screwed to studs). A well-installed semi-custom kitchen outlives a poorly installed custom one every time. We will show you samples from each tier at the estimate so you can judge with your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are plywood boxes worth the upgrade?

Yes. Plywood resists moisture and holds screws far better than particleboard, which swells and crumbles when wet. In a kitchen — where sink leaks happen — it is the single most important construction upgrade.

How long do semi-custom cabinets take to arrive?

Typically several weeks from order to delivery, since they are built for your project. We order early in the timeline and schedule the install around the confirmed delivery date.

Can I mix tiers in one kitchen?

Sometimes — for example, semi-custom for the main run and stock for a laundry or mudroom. But mixing within the visible kitchen usually shows in finish and detail differences. We will tell you where it works and where it does not.
